FAQs

How can counseling help me?

The American Counseling Association (ACA) defines counseling as “a collaborative effort between the counselor and client.” I provide a space that fosters hope, optimism and safety and facilitates self-expression and self-understanding. Our past, our circumstances, even our own emotions and thoughts can cause us pain.  How we respond to these struggles creates opportunities for growth and a lessening of our suffering.  If you find that this pain is causing distress and hardship within your day-to-day life, then you are probably suffering. The ACA adds, “Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health.”

How long does counseling last?

It depends (this is a very common answer in counseling…). The length of treatment is based on your needs and what you want help with in therapy. Some clients work on their issue, feel better, and only stay a few sessions. Some clients spend a year or more working on complex issues. Some clients will come back to treatment periodically to work on different issues as they come up. We will work together to determine what works best for you.
